Tie Dye Scrunchies

If you are following me on Instagram, you know I’m in the throws of sewing up an epic Ombre Puff Quilt, but I decided to take a break mid-project to whip up a batch of fun little scrunchies!

I find that my daughters and I are always scrambling for a scrunchie, and we usually end up nabbing each other’s, so a big batch of these handy little hair wonders was in order.

I used the brand new Tie Dye fabric from Riley Blake Designs. Their Tie Dye is available in both quilting cotton and jersey knit, and quite honestly, both would be fantastic for scrunchies! I opted to use the quilting cotton and I am obsessed with this fabric! The Tie Die prints come in bright and pastel rainbows or in a variety of tonal options. I think my favorite is the Tonal Black version — probably because most of my wardrobe is black, gray, and white.

I used this easy SCRUNCHIE TUTORIAL by See Kate Sew. The first scrunchie I made was this sweet pink version. I love it, but I realized I like my scrunchies to be a little narrower in width, so I started experimenting by using a larger seam allowance. Kate’s pattern calls for a 1/4” seam allowance. This creates this nice, wide look that almost has the appearance of a flower when it is in the hair. Very pretty.

I wanted mine a little narrower. First I tried a 1/2” seam allowance, but finally landed on 5/8”. Of course, I could have just cut the strips narrower and kept the 1/4” seam allowance, but they were already cut, and I was already sewing so I opted to just sew a larger seam allowance.

Here you can see the two versions side-by-side. Both scrunchies use the same length fabric and same length elastic. The only difference was the width of the fabric (or seam allowance in my case).

Here is how they each look “scrunched up.” One is just a little tighter than the other.
