Happy Squares Baby Quilt

Another quilt is finished and it feels great!!! I’m particularly happy with how this quilt turned out because I didn’t have a solid plan in mind when I started cutting into the fabrics. The ideas started forming in my head as I went along and I absolutely LOVE it! I’m calling this the Happy Squares Baby Quilt.

I don’t have a pattern to share, again, because this wasn’t planned out in advance, however, I will be working on a pattern to share with you soon.

I used fabric from the Bumble and Bear collection designed by the lovely and talented Sandy Gervais for Riley Blake Designs, along with some of Sandy’s Texture Basics.

The centers of the blocks come from the Bumble and Bear fabric panel. I fell in love with the sweet artwork and quote from Winnie the Pooh. This is a small fabric panel, measuring just 12” x 43 1/2”. The blocks are 6” square. I used all of the blocks for the front of the quilt and incorporated the quote into the back of the quilt.

After assembling all of the “happy square” blocks, I decided to alternate them with a combination of yellow and low volume fabrics from the fabric collection. I really love the color yellow, and I’m thrilled with just how the yellow, along with the brown border, really pulled the entire quilt together, giving it an overall sweet, sunny feel.

For the quilt back, I used Buttercream Texture, also by Sandy Gervais.

I didn’t have quite enough of the Texture for the quilt back, so I sewed together rectangles from the green and mint Bumble and Bear fabrics to create a scrappy extension. I also incorporated the Winnie the Pooh quote from the fabric panel into this extension. I love how it adds a sweet little surprise to the quilt back.

I quilted it with a tight overall meandering design. This was an easy decision for me since I loved the idea of mimicking the bumble bee’s flight pattern.

The inner border is the Bumble and Bear Brown Stitched Flowers. I was just a little short, so you can see in the bottom corner, I used some of the Bumble and Bear Brown Plaid as a stop gap. I actually love the scrappy touch it adds. The outer border is Buttercream Texture from Riley Blake. The binding is Riley Blake Confetti Cotton in Teddy Bear brown.

I love how the blocks turned out. Each little square from the panel is featured, and they are so darn cute!

The little star points at the corners add such a fun, happy feeling to the quilt, perfectly matching the happy vibes of this adorable fabric line.

The overall quilt measures approximately 44” x 55”, making it a nice size toddler quilt. You could definitely remove one row for a smaller baby size quilt.

Thank you for stopping by! The Happy Squares pattern will be available in 2023. Be sure to follow me on Instagram and subscribe to my YouTube Channel for all of the latest pattern updates, creative content, and project inspiration.
