Pan Am Retro Travel Bag
When Riley Blake Designs introduced their new officially licensed Pan Am fabric line, I knew I needed to get my hands on it, and I knew I would be making the Retro Travel Bag by Polka Dot Chair.
I am a sucker for all things mid century modern, and the Pan Am fabric fit that vibe to a “T.”
I used three prints from the collection - the Multi Travel Posters, Red Dots, and Red Geometric.

The bag is generously sized, making it a perfect weekender bag. You have the option of making fabric straps or adding storebought leather or other straps. I opted for the fabric straps, and while my stitching is a little wonky (because I neglected to follow instructions), I love the contrast of the red geometric print. I used the red geometric print for the pocket fabric as well, so you’ll also see that red fabric peeking out just a smidge around the zipper. I love when this happens because it adds another pop of interest.
I happened to have a fun little airplane charm, which made the perfect accent for this bag. LOVE it!
I lined the bag with the red dots and used the red geometric print for the inside pocket fabric. The bias tape pocket trim is store bought.
I’m in love with the contrasting brown zipper and orange piping. The orange isn’t too bright — more of a muted citrusy orange color.
I created a short video showing how I join the piping on a diagonal to give it a nice, professional look. This is super easy to do and a great trick to have in your sewing repitoire.
I think this would make the best gift for anyone who loves travel or who just loves a good retro vibe. Pan Am fabric is available now at quilt shops and online retailers.
